A BinaxNOW COVID-19 test kit manufactured by Abbott, showing a faint positive result.

Out of all of the times for me to get sick, and especially to come down with COVID, of all things, it had to be during a weekend trip to New York City. I felt fine when my friend and I left the house, and then by the end of the first day, I had a very mild sore throat and a tiny bit of congestion. I dismissed it as nothing and continued on without saying anything to my friend, since I felt fine otherwise. By the end of the second day, my sore throat had gotten worse, I had a runny nose, and I was having trouble keeping up with my friend (with whom I usually have no problem keeping up). By the early evening of the second day, I was suspecting COVID, as the symptoms and the way that they came on mirrored what it felt like the last time that I had COVID in late 2021. So I picked up a COVID test at a Duane Reade store, took it for a spin when I got back to the hotel, and this was the result. Because everything was already paid for on our trip, we still ran the full trip as planned, though I stayed in the hotel the rest of the evening on the middle day. When I got home from the trip, I spent the next four days home from work being sick.
