View through the window of the Amazon Fresh store in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Amazon had announced an Amazon Fresh store for Gaithersburg in 2020, taking over a building that previously housed an Office Depot. Following a long buildout and setup process for "Just Walk Out" technology, work on the store eventually ceased. Amazon formally cancelled this store in spring 2023, and removed its signage from the building. The plans were revived about a year later, and the location opened as Amazon Fresh on August 8, 2024.
This photo was taken during the period where the store was still considered a going concern for Amazon in its original form, but work on the store had ceased. At this time, the store had been fitted with the "Just Walk Out" technology, which used cameras throughout the store to automatically tally a shopper's selections as they shopped and then charge them upon exiting. The "Just Walk Out" system was removed when plans for the store were revived, and the store used a combination of "dash carts" and more conventional point-of-sale systems when it opened.
